Fistula Treatment Kolkata Medica Hospitals

Comprehensive Fistula Treatment at Medica

Medica’s Laser Proctology Program (Laser Treatment)

Laser Proctology refers to the treatment of conditions related to the colon, anus and rectum that is done with the help of a laser.

How does it work?

A high energy precision laser is used to operate on the affected tissue during the surgery. As a result, the procedure leaves:

  • No Scars or Cuts or Stitches
  • No Blood
  • No Pain

Anal fistula surgery using a laser technique entails inserting a radiation-emitting probe into the anal area where the fistula has developed. The probe’s radiation is then directed directly at the fistula, destroying its epithelium and obliterating the rest of the fistula channel/tract.

What is an Anal Fistula? (ফিস্টুলা/ फिस्टुला)

Sometimes in the area between the end of the bowel and the skin near the anus a small, infected channel develops, usually as a result of an infection in the anal gland. This is called anal fistula.

As per a recent study, anal fistula is seen as a common condition with an annual incidence of around 2 per 10,000 people, with a peak incidence between the ages of 30 and 50.

Generally men are more prone to be affected by this condition than women. A skilled surgeon or proctologist can help you remedy fistulas through surgical intervention.

Causes of Anal Fistula

Usually, anal fistulas are caused due to ‘abscess’. An abscess forms when the glands inside your anus that make fluids get clogged up and a bacterial build-up creates a swollen pocket of infected tissue in the anal area.

Apart from having a long-standing abscess, the following can also lead to the formation of an anal fistula:

  • Tuberculosis
  • STDs
  • Underlying Medical Conditions (Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis)
  • Trauma

Symptoms of Anal Fistula

If you suspect of having anal fistula, cross-refer with these symptoms to proceed with the right treatment at the earliest:

  • Pain in Abdomen
  • Pus or Bloody Discharge
  • Swelling around the Anal Area
  • Skin Maceration or Pruning
  • Redness around the Anal Area

You may also experience:

  • Fever
  • Pain while Urinating/ Bowel Movements

Diagnosis:

An anal fistula is typically diagnosed by examining the area around the anus. The doctor can produce drainage from the external opening to determine the depth and direction of the fistula tract.

Additional tests, such as Anoscopy, are used if the fistula is not visible on the skin’s surface. The doctor may also order an MRI or ultrasound to better define the fistula.

Treatment for Anal Fistula

Because there is no medication to treat the condition, surgery is used to treat the fistula.

Anal fistulas are typically treated using a variety of fistula surgical techniques or options.

From scheduling an appointment at the clinic to receiving a detailed diagnosis, scheduling tests at a diagnostic centre, completing insurance paperwork, commuting from home to the hospital and back on the day of surgery, admission-discharge processes at the hospital, and follow-up consultation after the surgery – everything is simple and caring. COMMON QUESTIONS

If you avoid or postpone anal fistula treatment, you risk serious complications such as sepsis (bacterial infection), low blood pressure, organ damage, and even death. To avoid such complications, we recommend that you do not postpone or avoid anal fistula treatment.

The success rate of fistula surgery varies from patient to patient. It differs from one patient to the next due to:

  • The patient’s gender
  • Anal fistula type and severity that is treated or removed
  • Underlying anorectal diseases that can jeopardise surgery outcomes
  • Depending on these factors, the success rate of fistula surgery can range from 75% to 97 percent.
  • The type of fistula surgery used (laser or open)

Doctors recommend this procedure over the conventional method of open fistula surgery due the following reasons:

  • Short operation time
  • Same day discharge
  • Performed under local anaesthesia
  • Faster recovery time
  • Chances of bleeding during surgery is nil
  • Risk of post surgery is minimal as is risk of prolapse
  • Requires less follow-up visits to the doctor
  • Leaves minimal/no scars

You may have an anal fistula if you observe any of the following symptoms in or around your anus.

  • Itching
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Irritation
  • Pus or Bloody discharge
