The 1st day itself saw as many as 25 busloads of excited school children arrive at the venue - 2500 in all and from 8 different schools- filling the lobby and the corridors. For the people at MEDICA, the experience was the first of its kind and truly heartwarming. The children asked questions, wanted to know more about several things on display, demanded drinking water, lost and found their shoes outside the Operation Theatre,and generally kept the atmosphere alive and buzzing with their lively spirit. There was also a special quiz framed for them, the answers to which were to be found as they went through the exhibition, and it kept them totally involved and heightened their attentiveness. At the end of the Walk-thru, the children thanked the escorts at Medica and said that it was a wonderful, unique experience. One even commented that he was speechless! For the next two days the Walk-thru was kept open to the general public and found several people - young and old - taking the rounds of the exhibits. The complicated surgery was performed on Harda Bhawsingka, a 75-year-old lady with a history of recurrent severe aortic stenosis following aortic valve replacement, performed 10 years back, peak systolic gradient of 115mmHg, cancer of breast - status post radical mastectomy, bed-ridden due to severe bilateral osteoarthritis in the knee, morbid obesity, hypothyroidism, biventricular hypertrophy, Bifascicular block in ECG, and early parkinsonism. The patient required total knee replacement surgery on both knees. As the functional status of the patient was difficult to assess, coronary angiography was planned. Trans radial angiogram was done by Medica’s Cardiology team as she could not lie flat. The co-morbid combination of the patient is an anaesthesiologist’s nightmare as any form of traditional anaesthetic technique would lead to sudden cardiac death due to coronary blood flow compromise due to any hypotensive event following anaesthesia.
